Description

Main scientific interest of dr Krzysztof Szade concerns the biology of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). His studies uncovered new mechanisms of HSCs aging, their expansion and increased age-related myeloid bias. Dr Szade identified new marker (Neogenin-1) and was first to prospectively isolate myeloid-biased fraction among strictly defined HCSs in mice. In his work he described differentiation hierarchy within the heterogeneous pool of HSCs (PNAS 2019). Dr Szade demonstrated also, that disfunction of bone marrow niche may induce premature aging of HSCs. He showed, that phenotype of premature aging can be partially reversed by transplantation to mice with properly functioning bone marrow niche (EMBO Reports 2020). He also characterized mechanisms of bone marrow niche regeneration (Cell Reports 2024). The scientific achievements of dr Szade was noticed among international scientific community of stem cell research (44 publications, H-index 22, over 2600 citations). His results were presented during talks at most important conferences (ISSCR, EMBO, EVBO, FEBS), he is laurate of ERC Starting Grant, and conducted research in cooperation with renowned international scientific units (NCN Harmonia grant– Stanford University, NCN Mozart grant– Medical University in Graz). Currently, Dr Szade is the head of the Laboratory of Stem Cell Biology at Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology at Jagiellonian University.
