Description
Dr. Colin Adrain’s career has focused on the regulation of proteostasis during health and disease. He obtained his PhD from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland where he dissected the regulatory pathways that control the activation of caspases, the proteolytic enzymes that orchestrate apoptosis. During his postdoctoral work (LMB, Cambridge, UK) he identified a key proteostasis mechanism that regulates the trafficking and activity of the cell surface metalloprotease ADAM17, which plays a key role in inflammatory and growth factor signalling. Adrain established his independent research group in 2013 in the Gulbenkian Institute (IGC) in Lisbon, Portugal and now runs his research group at Queen’s University, Belfast. His lab focuses on dissecting proteostasis regulatory mechanisms that impinge on protein quality control in the endoplasmic reticulum and within the nucleus, and the impact that these processes have on cell signalling and metabolism.
